A guide to the rules, judging and penalties that will be used to crown the world's best surfers Aug. 7-14 at the World Surfing Games in Jacó, Costa Rica.
While his surfing has always been outstanding -- a mixture of power and aerials — Jason Torres has had to learn and accept an important lesson among professional competitors: It takes a certain mindset to be a winner.
"I'm very proud to be one of the first surfers in Jacó. I am seeing the results of everything I've worked for. It's not something I deserve; it's something I've earned. I worked for it, and I'm still here working hard and still have a lot of passion."
Jason Torres claimed his first national surf championship after 10 years competing on the Costa Rican national surf circuit. Meanwhile, Lisbeth Vindas continued to make history with her 12th national women’s championship title.
