Internship Info:

The Tico Times offers four-month, unpaid writing and photography internships for aspiring journalists and photographers with relevant education and experience. Interns have the opportunity to learn the ropes in a newsroom, put their skills to practical application and live in Costa Rica. Click here for opportunities to intern at The Nica Times in Nicaragua.

The writing internship is a full-time, working position. This intern writes feature stories and news stories each week. Spanish fluency is a firm requirement, as most interviews and research must be conducted in Spanish. Because the writing intern primarily works for the “Weekend” section (the features section), he or she will have the opportunity to travel throughout the country writing travel stories and hotel reviews. However, most of the intern's time will be spent in the Central Valley area.

The photography internship requires intermediate Spanish. This is also a full-time position, but with a flexible schedule. The photo intern works for the features section and the news section, and will be able to take advantage of travel opportunities with the writing intern; the pair will work together on many assignments. The photo intern should have his or her own digital camera.

Internship dates and application deadlines are as follows:

Spring Internship (January through April) – Apply by Sept. 20

Summer Internship (May through August) – Apply by Jan. 20

Fall Internship (September through December) – Apply by May 20

To apply, candidates must send the following items to our office by the specified deadline:

1. A cover letter stating which internship you are applying for and explaining why you want to work for The Tico Times.

2. A resume outlining your journalism/photography experience and Spanish skills/training.

3. At least three writing clips (no more than five) or three feature photos (no landscapes).

4. Additional information or items are accepted, but please do not go overboard.

Please send applications to Weekend Editor Meg Yamamoto via e-mail to myamamoto@ticotimes.net.

The Nica Times offers three-month, unpaid internships for aspiring journalists and photographers in Nicaragua. Interns have the opportunity to learn the ropes  in an exciting, politically charged country. Interns should bring their own laptop, and photography interns will have to provide their own camera as well. Contact Tim Rogers, trogers@ticotimes.net.
