Well the fishing in Quepos has been great on the Mar 1 we have been one of the few boats that thankfully have been going out consistantly. The mahi-mahi were crazy up untill Dec 23 and then it was like someone flicked a switch and the Mahis slowed and the Sails took over, we are now averaging 3 or so a trip!! Great way to start the new years.
Take Care

Today the dorado were found 12 miles offshore. They were in the 30 pound range and plentiful. Everyone caught all they wanted and began releasing. Some guys even broke out the fly gear and caught some on streamers.
If you are going to keep your dorado, go ahead and gaff it. Get it into the cooler quickly and close the lid. You can then disconnect the leader and get right back to fishing. This saves the fish from going nuts on deck and getting blood everywhere. Clean or fillet as soon as you can, and keep it on ice. Done this way the dorado gets home in great shape...fresh and tasty.
The sails were back to biting and several boats reported releases. Maybe Ida is gone for good and our great bite will return.

Quepos
Thursday, Nov.5 2009
We have had tropical storm, now hurricane Ida, forming off the Atlantic coast for the last few days. No high winds here, but lots of rain at night and low barometric pressures.
As a result the debris lines are forming and providing very good, near shore fishing. Some boats have been going as little as 8 miles to find a wealth of mahi-mahi (dorado). The fish averaging 30-35 pounds going as big as 65 pounds for the bulls. Catches of 30 fish are not uncommon. Mixed in are a few wahoo and tripletail.
The sails and marlin are here...but are being difficult. They show up in the spread, bat things around and refuse to eat. Gets your heart pumping and then nothing. Maybe it's a little early or the passing storm...but better days are coming for the billfish.
Red snapper and grouper are to be found on structure if you have good numbers. Baits run from live bonito to squid strips to jigs. Rooster fish inshore waiting to give you a good pull if you have some fresh live bait.
Things are clearing this afternoon, so Ida is on her way. It's a few days past the full moon ...so maybe tomorrow.
See you then, Wavy

What a difference a day makes…Tuesday my buddies and I went out and caught 10 sailfish and 1 dorado. Yesterday we went out and caught just 1 fish…but it was a 300 pound blue marlin.
We got an early start and fished the same spot as yesterday. The ocean was calm but there was no sailfish. About an hour in we trolled past a log and hooked up a 20 plus pound dorado. He swam right to the boat and spit the bait out.
We saw another boat working some spinner dolphins for yellowfin tuna, so we joined in. We worked the dolphin pack for an hour but never had a tuna bite. There must have been 300 plus spinner dolphin in the pack. We saw a couple 50 pound tuna and a couple 100 pound tuna crashing baits but they were not interested in our cedar plugs and Hawaiian eyes with ballyhoo. Live bait would be best but we didn’t have any. I didn’t see any boat catch a tuna.
We tired of chasing the spinners without getting any tuna so we stated to troll back toward the outer crater. We had been trolling about 30 minutes when the 300 pound blue marlin crashed our spread. He came up on our brand new Pakula teaser.
Most billfish make an big initial run…this marlin didn’t. He was less than 100 yards from the boat the whole time. He would go deep for 5 minutes and then come rushing for the surface…then he would greyhound a bit and then go deep again. This went on for 45 minutes. I was using a TLD 20 with 30 pound line so I could not put too much pressure on him. I finally got him to the boat, thanks to some good driving by my buddy RJ, and we got a safe release. I must admit that fish kicked my butt. He was so fast and never showed signs of being tired…I can’t say the same.
Before the marlin the ocean was beautiful…within 10 minutes of having that fish on the waves picked up and the rain started to move in.
When the rains came they came hard and it was dumping cats and dogs out there. After the marlin release we pulled everything in and made for home. It was a long, bumpy, wet drive home but a 300 pound blue marlin made it all worth it.
Gracias,
Bubba

Fishing Report: Fishing Report for Quepos Costa Rica has remained great through April 16th. Quepos Fishing Charter client on April 15th Matt Rubenstein headed offshore with the hope to catch a big Sailfish. He fished by himself with Captain Glenn Morales and First Mate Michael Meza. They were 37 miles out where they found the action. Hooked into a Marlin that he fought for 2 hours before getting it to the boat followed by 3 Sailfish releases. He came in an hour early to tell about his releases. Casey Doran fished the Threasure out of Dominical and released a Sailfish and caught a nice Dorado that he was seeking. Rick Blount fished with Idra on the 10th fishing a half day and released a nice sail and had a nice Dorado as pictured. Mike Allen and his son Jesse fished with Pez Espada and released 3 sailfish. They were just thrilled to get the Catch of Lifetime. Robby Mitchell and friends of the Simmons group fished 4 consecutive days in Quepos and released a bunch of Sailfish Robby got his Marlin. His "Bucket List" was fulfilled after a lifetime of fishing had never caught a fish over 5 lbs! He was rewarded with a 400lb Marlin on Pez Espada. The inshore bite has been terrific with clients of Quepos Fishing releasing lots of giant Roosterfish this month

Im the guy who caught the the giant yellowfin out of Quepos. I had to hand the rod off after an hour and a half to Yoni, the captain. He fought it, then after an hour, handed the rod off to Luis, the boat owner. We switched off for just over four hours and we got a tail rope on it about five o clock. I come from Cape Cod and have caught giant bluefin tuna up to 800 lbs but this s.o.b. took us for an 8 mile four hour Nantucket sleigh ride. I asked Luis when we headed back in from forty miles out with the sun going down if he had ever gone in after dark. His response was a calm nope, first time, longest fight i have ever fought. Next day was 30 lb snook 35 lb roosterfish. I fished with Luis and Yoni from Hotel Malinche

Here in Quepos we are struggling with red tide and though the algae has not been that dense, we'd much rather it went away completely.
In spite of the algae, the fishing has been holding strong with hot wahoo bites, fairly reliable tuna fishing and some dorado. The sailfish have been sluggish and the marlin are less than on fire but the bottom fishing both inshore and offshore has been good with grouper and snapper chewing...fish around this months moon for the best red snapper action of the year.

Hola,
For the past week most of the boats have been fishing inshore for roosterfish, snapper and more. Today was much of the same but there were some boats running offshore to fish for the big game and first reports are the offshore bite was better.
Captain Kevin on the "Hoo's your Daddy" has been banging around the inshore rocks all week and picking up good numbers. The highlight of the week was probably the 125 plus pound goliath grouper they caught on a butterfly jig. Yesterday Captain Kevin caught a nice cubera, a mackerel, a couple roosterfish and a half a dozen big jack crevelle. Today they caught a 50 plus pound Cubera and 4 Roosterfish with one of them being in the 70 pound range.
The guys on the "Fandango" caught 8 roosterfish today...they fished Negritas and a couple spots closer to the marina.
Captain Dave on the "Missbehavin" caught a couple roosterfish and a couple dorado.
Captain RJ on the "Predator" caught 2 tuna, 2 rooster and 2 mahi mahi. RJ reported the water was loaded with logs and was filthy greenish brown in color. RJ did say the live bait is thick on the inshore rocks. RJ said he was catching 4 or 5 bluerunners on each sabiki cast.
I heard rumors of a decent offshore bite and I am trying to confirm. I heard boats were averaging 2 or 3 sailfis, a few dorado and some tuna. There was talk of a big marlin being caught but I have not been able to verify.
Good Luck and Good Fishing,
Bubba

Hola,
The bite out of the Los Sueños Marina has slowed to some average numbers. A week ago the bite was out west and then a few days ago it moved to the south and now it seems to be scattered. For the past two days most of the boats have been running 30 and 40 miles but not pulling the huge Sailfish numbers that we have had the past month. Most of the boats today seemed to run hard and slug it out for 2 or 3 fish.
Yesterday Captain Carlos on the “R&J” took Brain and his buddy offshore and caught 3 Sailfish, a Mahi Mahi and a Marlin.
Yesterday Captain Tim on the “Tres Amigos” pulled 3 deuces with 2 Sailfish, 2 Mahi Mahi and 2 Striped Marlin over 200 pounds. Today they took Steve and his buddies out and went 1 for 7 on Sailfish. The Captain went 42 miles and fished hard for those fish…sometimes they bite aggressively and sometimes they don’t.
Yesterday Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” released 8 Sailfish and kept a 45 pound Dorado for the grill. Today Captain Bill went 5 for 8 on Sailfish…he was out about 40 miles.
When the bite is 40 miles out the half day charters are forced to fish inshore. The Inshore Fishing has been good the past week…with everyone catching some Roosterfish mixed in with some Amber Jacks, Cubera Snapper and Grouper.
Thanks,
Bubba

Hola,
The fishing just got better out of the Los Suenos Marina. The reports of raising 40 fish were confirmed. It seems that the guys on the Desperado released 28 some Sailfish out by the craters.
The word on the street today was about the Marlin bite. Lots of boats picking up Striped, Black and Blue Marlin less than 25 miles out. We have gone a month without a big Marlin bite…but today things changed.
Captain Jeremy on the “R&J” caught a Blue Marlin, a Striped Marlin, 2 Dorado and 2 Sailfish.
Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” caught a Striped Marlin, 4 Sailfish and a 50 pound Bull Dorado. His clients wanted to jump in the water at the end of the day. Dana had pull everything in but one ballyhoo. While his customers were swimming Captain Dana’s line came tight and he hooked up a big Sailfish. The couple quickly slid through the transom door like a couple of seals ad landed the fish.
Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” banged them out going 12 for 20 on Sails today and 22 for 33 yesterday. He was anxious to chase the Marlin bite tommorow.
Captain RJ fished with the guys on the “Iron Lady” and released 3 Marlin, a few Sails and a couple Dorado.
thanks,
Bubba

Hola,
The Sailfish bite out of the Los Suenos Marina continues to be solid even with the full moon. The fish seemed to have moved to the west and the bite was anywhere between 20-30 miles out and everyone was catching Sailfish. There were some Mahi Mahi and Marlin bites as well…lots of guys were looking for the Yellowfin Tuna but no luck.
Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” went 9 for 12 on Sailfish and had a couple nice Mahi Mahi.
Captain Jerry on the “Estrella del Mar” released 5 Sailfish while fishing with Jonathon’s group.
Captain Dave on the “Missbehavin” took a family from Pensacola fishing and they went 5 for 9 on Sailfish. Everyone on the boat caught their first Sailfish…congrats.
thanks for your time,
Bubba

A month ago a guy from Atlanta sent me a email about fishing…he ended his letter like this:
Sincerely,
Greg Groover (a person who badly wants to catch a sailfish)
He wasn’t greedy, he didn’t ask for 10 Sailfish, a Marlin, some Tuna, a few Dorado, a Wahoo and a Roosterfish all on a half day trip like some people do. He was just a person that badly wants to catch a Sailfish…just one.
I’m happy to report Mr. Groover and his folks went 2 for 4 on Sailfish on a half day trip on the “Scorpion”. He called me after the trip and I could hear the excitement and happiness in his voice.
I almost forgot what it was like to catch the first Sailfish. I grew up in Nebraska where a big fish was a 10 pound Carp so when I caught my first Sailfish in Quepos in 1998 I was instantly hooked. I went home and within a year sold everything I had, left a good job and took a chance on Costa Rica.
Ten years later and there have been some good times and there have been some bad times but I’ve caught hundreds of Sailfish and I’ve help hundreds of friends and tourist catch Sailfish…I love this country and I love my job.
To say that one Sailfish in Quepos back in 1998 changed my life is a understatement. Will it have the same effect on Mr. Groover? Will he sell everything he has and move down here because Costa Rica has great fishing and beautiful women? Probably not, but I hope he at least reads this and sends me some photos of his first Sailfish and I hope he visits Costa Rica again.
Congrats Greg…and thanks for the reminder.

January Fishing Report
January is the first full month of our “high season” fishing and I am happy to say the fishing has been good and getting better. The Marlin fishing has been steady, the Tuna and Dorado bite has been average and there were some boats with really good Sailfish days towards the end of the month. There have not been many inshore reports because most of the boats are going offshore.
Congratulations go out to Captain Marvin and the crew of “The Bite” for taking first place in the 2008 Los Suenos Signature Billfish Series. They released 6 Striped Marlin and 22 Sailfish. It was a good day for the Maverick boat company with their boats coming in win, place and show…now I want one.
Overall the Tournament was a success. The Sailfish numbers were a little disappointing but the Marlin numbers were incredible. Several captains mentioned it as one of the best Blue Marlin bites they had ever heard of…several boats released 5 and 6 Marlin on the first day of the tourney.
Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s Your Daddy” took a group from Michigan out for a great day…they caught 9 Sail, 2 Grouper, 3 Snapper and a big Dorado.
Captain Dave on the "Miss Behavin" caught a 400 pound Blue Marlin, a 500 pound Black Marlin, a few Tuna and a couple Dorado…he called it one of his best days.
Captain RJ on the "Predator" was busy in the month of January. He had several good days for “food fish” at the “26”, and several good days at the “craters” with some nice Marlin releases.
Captain Brandon on the “Fish Whistle” had a few really good days in January. He took some friends out from Minnesota for a half day trip recently and they went 3 for 5 on Sailfish, caught a 40 pound Dorado for supper and raised a big Blue Marlin.
Captain Marvin and the guys on “The Bite” had a few nice Sailfish days in January…word on the street is they released 25 Sailfish in one day. Winner, winner…chicken dinner.
February Fish Forecast --
Hopefully the improved Sailfish numbers will continue in February.
It seems like the Marlin fishing is here to stay so look for above average numbers again in February, especially for those that target Marlin and go further and fish harder.
There will also be lots of Dorado, Tuna and Wahoo caught by boats going offshore for Sailfish and Marlin.
2007 was the year of the Marlin but our "bread and butter" is still the Sailfish The majority of the people coming to Costa Rica to fish want to catch a Sailfish and we have some of the best Sailfish waters in the world.
On the subject of tourist i would like to remind the guys on the charter boats to help your clients get good photos. Many of the people you take fishing will never catch a big fish again. If they have a good photo they will tell fish stories for years to come.
Helpful Hints: Position the fish correctly, make sure there is enough sun light on the fish, clear out all the rods, deck chairs and other obstacles between the camera and the fish, make sure you get the client and the fish in the photo, take a bunch of photos...hopefully one will be good.
Good luck and Good fishing,
bubba

Fishing is very good on the Savegre. From a distance you can clearly see the fish in runs and pools. Though the majority of the rainbows run 8 to 12 inches, what makes the fishing exciting is surprises like this bigger fish fooled by a bh prince dropper below a Royal Wulff at dusk. Fish are eager but very skittish. Because of the current they're strong, and they give a good account of themselves when hooked. Some are spectular jumpers. You should approach potential spots with stealth and watch your shadow. Avoid letting a hooked fish run downstream into a heavy current because you'll probably lose l them. Any fly fishermen who would like to join me on a trip to the Savegre contact me. I have extra equipment.

November Fishing Report
2007 has been an incredible year for Marlin fishing out of the Los Suenos Marina and November of 2007 will go down as one of the best month ever for Marlin.
The guys on the “Gringo Honeymoon” fished out past the craters and went 4 for 10 on Marlin…boating 2 blues and 2 blacks; one fish was over 400 pounds. That same day in that same place Captain Tom on the “Agwe” went 4 for 10 on Marlin…boating 4 nice blues.
Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” caught big Marlin on back to back days out by Cabo Blanco…ending the month with more than a half of dozen Marlin.
Captain Dave on the “Mimi” caught a couple Blue Marlin in November. He said one day the Dorado were so thick he couldn’t even put his ballyhoo in the water without getting bit. You know the Marlin fishing is good when 40 pound Dorado are considered a nuisance.
The guys on the "Penguin" went 14 for 25 on Marlin in 3 days of fishing. They said some of the fish were smaller striped Marlin but 14 for 25 on any Marlin anywhere in the world is something special.
Marlin were the main focus in November. A few other boats reported Sailfish, Wahoo, Rooster and Tuna in average numbers.
December Fish Forecast --
December is traditionally the beginning of the peak Sailfish season. As the weather improves and the water clears the Sailfish, Tuna and Dorado numbers will increase and the bite will move in closer to shore.
The Marlin fishing will continue to be above average in December and has been getting more attention recently than the Sailfish.
The inshore fishing will be above average as December is a transition month and the bait moves in and out of the rocks, river mouths and estuaries.
December Fish of the Month – Sailfish (Pez Vela) –
Although the Marlin bite has been above average the Sailfish is still the king in the Pacific waters of Costa Rica. December is considered the beginning of peak Sailfish season. When the bite gets hot boats raise 10-40 Sailfish a day generally 20 to 30 miles out.
Please catch and release all billfish quickly.
World Record:
141 lbs. 1 ounce Luanda, Angola (Atlantic)
221 lbs. Santa Cruz, Ecuador (Pacific)
Good luck and good fishing,

I will be in Playa Hermosa from 12-10 through 1/10 with my family (from Alaska USA) and am looking for other fly fisherman (heck, any fishermen) who might want to join me on excusions inland and along the coast. I am less interested in the blue water, but that's in the offing as well. I'll be prepared for most conditions and would enjoy the company of others to split costs etc. I will have a vehicle, So, drop me a line.

Río Savegre Fishing Report for Saturday 8 th. September, 2007
With all the bad weather affecting both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, the resulting flooded rivers and muddy water made fishing difficult in most of the lower elevation areas. It was then left to the high mountain cloud forest rivers to offer some possible fishing and the Río Savegre was my first choice because of it being above the clouds and isolated from the main coastal weather patterns, we can usually get at least a good morning of fly fishing in gin clear spring water. The trout are also definitely willing to take dry flies in the morning and with luck, the big fish will be less reluctant to hit surface floating ants, beetles and caddis like flies. Ashley Armstrong considered herself a real novice at flyfishing and her husband Alex definitely was a fanatic angler and very able pocket water flyfisher. It was then my task to get Ashley into improving her flyfishing skills and manage some good trout hook-ups. At first I had to introduce Alex to the Rio Savegre and its wild rainbow trout. His second cast produced a medium sized McCloud rainbow trout with brilliant colors and his first opinion of this trout was that it was a lot like the brook trout he was fishing for some weeks ago. The difference here was that these fish had a lot more fighting spirit and certainly wilder than the ones he fished for back home in the US. With his ability to stalk the trout and cast with few false strokes, he was soon hooking trout using dry caddis patterns on every other cast. The surrounding trees and streamside brush did not give him any problem and his patience in retrieving flies from the few that did manage to find lodging during the backcast was an assurance that he could manage a lot of the fishing in the isolated pools down stream.
For most of the morning Ashley was silent and an intense observer of that was necessary to be successful on these tico trout .. and so now it was her turn to get the 2 weight fly rod rigged and line stretched. I situated her in a pool with lots of unobstructed space for good backcasts and rod handling. A well doped dry caddis fly and 9 ft. 7X leader got her casting into the pool presenting delicate strokes with gentle precision. Ashley was a quick learner and within this one pool she was able to catch and release 15 trout on this single caddis fly. Her catch rate and fish size improved with the use of a pheasant tail bead head nymph having a strike indicator attached to the line and then there was no more stopping her after that. She was now flyfishing with success and confidence.
The main fishing was best in the morning and late afternoon after the midday rain forced us off the water and in time to have a lunch break, time to re-rig leader tippets and dry some flies. The trout averaged 8 inches with a few that Ashley landed being in the 10 inch category. We naturally did get a few bigger hook-ups and those remained in the fantasy of the angler and the depth of the turbulent waters of the Rio Savegre. It was a wonderful day for all and we can only now look forward to the next months when we will be able to tackle the bigger fish in the lower pools. Ashley actually outfished Alex on these trout on the Savegre.
