Tomorrow on Exhibit
A new exhibit at Costa Rica's InBio Park offers a futuristic look at how changing climatic conditions might affect the world. A diagram shows the peninsula of Puntarenas becoming an island. And life changes drastically for polar bears and penguins with climate warming.
Over 75 tarpon were hooked this past week from the Rio Colroado Lodge. Of those 75, more than 30 were brought to the boat. In addition, guest caught tuna, bonito, barracuda, jacks, king mackeral, and a COBIA. Angkers from North Carolina identified the fish since guides working for Rio Colorado Lodge for more than 30 years had never seen one!
The fishing continues to be excellent this week, guest hookings tons of tarpon. The ocean is calm, and river nice and peaceful.

I have fished both Coast Rica and Panama as a light tackle fisherman and have found that the best one piece rod to catch small tarpon, snook, and peacock bass is the paka rod. The company makes flyrods and on what you'd swear was bamboo (it's graphite), spinning and casting. You should check them out.

Howdy,
There has been some red tide move into the area the past week but it hasn't hurt the fishing as much as expected. There were a couple days that were slow but for the most part everyone has been catching some fish.
The 26 rock has been hot with this past week good numbers of wahoo, tuna, dorado and a nice marlin being caught.
Captain RJ on the Predator has been at the rock almost everyday the past week. They have been averaging 5 or 6 fish a day including some 35 pound wahoo, some 25 pound tuna, some 20 pound mahi mahi and a 400 plus pound black marlin. I heard the news of RJ's marlin before he was back at the marina. The big marlin hit a ballyhoo while trolling for wahoo. As most marlin will do he put on a good air show with some great leaps. One of the leaps was too close for comfort when mr marlin almost landed in the boat. The big angry fish slammed into the boat tower just a couple feet from the captain and clients. RJ said it was like being hit by another boat and they were lucky no one was hurt.
Captain Dave on the Missbehavin took a group out to the rock and caught 6 nice wahoo and several 25 pound yellowfin tuna.
Captain Jeremy and the guys on the Desperado went way out a few days ago...they ran out 50 miles for a 35 pound mahi mahi...luckily the guys on The Bite found the tuna and contacted Jeremy. They picked up and ran 15 miles to join the tuna bite and caught some nice fish. Most of the fish were in the 35-45 pound range...they did have one hogg on that was estimated at over 100 pounds, that fish was lost.
Thanks and good luck,
Bubba

February Fishing Report
February is the busiest month in the marina at Los Suenos and the fishing has been very good with some great Sailfish numbers. The one week of rain we had slowed the bite for a few days and pushed the blue water and the bite out past 40 miles. After the full moon the boats that fished out past 40 were rewarded with some great days.
Captain Bill on the “Sailfish” was on a roll the last week of February averaging 12 Sailfish and 3 Dorado (40 pounds) per day.
John Jackson and some friends went out on the “Ashley Nicole” with Captain Dean and had a really good day. They caught 4 Sailfish, a Mahi Mahi for dinner, a striped Marlin and John got his first ever “Blue Marlin”…congrats John.
Mark and his group went out on the “Barbarrosa” and caught 8 Sailfish, 3 Dorado and one Striped Marlin.
Captain Jeremy on the “R&J” caught a 70 pound Broom tail Grouper in the same area.
Captain Glenn on the “Bethina” took a group from Minnesota 55 miles out and was rewarded by raising 30 Sailfish and Marlin.
Captain Kevin on the “Hot Reels” had a good day going 4 for 8 on Sailfish. They also caught 2 nice Dorado and a 300 plus pound Blue Marlin.
Captain Dave on the “MissBehavin” took a group a guys from Philly out to corner and had a great day going 8 for 11 on Sailfish and they caught one nice Mahi Mahi for the grill.
Captain Dana on the “Hoo’s your Daddy” went 7 for 10 on Sails in the same area…they also raised a 300 pound Blue Marlin.
Randy and his wife from Florida went out on the “Scorpion” and caught 2 Sailfish, raised a 300 plus pound Marlin and caught a 50 plus pound Bull Mahi Mahi. That’s their biggest Mahi ever so they are having a fiberglass mount made.
Captain RJ on the “Predator” fished offshore and caught 6 Sailfish, 4 Dorado and a big Striped Marlin on one of his best days in February.
March Fish Forecast --
Hopefully the big Sailfish numbers will continue in March. The second leg of the Los Suenos Billfish Series is this month and some big Sailfish and Marlin numbers would be a wonderful thing.
The Marlin fishing will be consistent with the occasional Blue and Black being caught. The Striped Marlin bite was above average in February…look for that to continue.
There will also be lots of big Dorado and Tuna caught by boats going offshore for Sailfish and Marlin.
March Fish of the Month – Marlin
The second leg of the Los Suenos Signature Billfish Tournament is March 12th – 15th. More than 50 boats are expected to compete for over $200,000 in prizes.
Captain Marvin and the crew of “The Bite” won the first event in January by releasing 6 Striped Marlin and 22 Sailfish. With the Maverick boats finishing 1st,2nd and 3rd in that tourney expect one of those boats to be the favorite for the second go round.
The bite has been good so I’ll guess the winning boat will release 50 plus Sailfish and a half dozen Marlin in the 3 day event. Sailfish are worth 100 points and any Marlin is worth 500 points. All fish are released.
Stop by bubba’s and listen to the “live” fish reports on the VHF radio.
Good Luck and Good Fishing,
bubba

We Fished the Swordfish out of Los Sueños for two days and Quepos for three days in the mid Part of January. Multiple hook ups with Dorado both on a fly and conventional. The fishing was slow with a full moon upon us but we managed several sails on a fly. Our 8 Y/O caught his first Dorado on Conventional with the help of a wonderful experienced crew. With friends on board we had a conventional triple with Doardo and all were landed. We also had a double with a nice pair of sails. The best part of the trip was hooking up with two blue Marlins on a fly. The first was perfect for the fly and eventually broke of at the leader next to the boat. The seond was bigger and flat out beat me up. My fingers from the reel handle were blistered. My knees were bruised and hip bloody from rod placement after two hours of fighting. Out of exhaustion I then turned the rod over to fellow angler and Guide Shane Smith of which he fought this monster on a fly for another hour before she finally broke the butt section of the leader and went on her way. We both were truly humbled and blessed to enjoy this wonderful fish for three hours total on a fly rod before she broke off. Our experience In Costa Rica aboard the Swordfish was truly world class.

Call me "sancocho," Costa Rican slang for someone who misses or loses fish. I took a busman's holiday away from Crocodile Bay to fish with Captain Eddie Brown (834-2221) out of Tortuga Lodge in Tortugero.
You may have noticed there is no photo with this report because I lost every tarpon I hooked. After a decade away from the Caribbean side I lost my touch.
We spent one day out 28 miles looking for blue water stuff and only saw a few wahoo. Did some deep jigging in 200 feet and every thing we hooked got eaten. Finally boated a 45 pound barracuda and figured out who the thief was.
The next two days we fished in front of the Tortugero and Colorado bar mouths and I hooked several tarpon on the fly and even had a 110 pounder to the boat before he came unbuttoned.
My wife Jeaneth tired after fighting a 140 pound tarpon for over an hour and handed the rod to me. In less than a minute I lost the fish.
Eddie is a great captain and we saw rolling fish everywhere he stopped to fish. I had my chances and I make no excuses. I am a "sancocho."
