Bridge repairs complicate travel between La Aurora and Barreal in Heredia

By Nate Perkins
Tico Times Staff | nperkins@ticotimes.net

The bridge normally serving the eastbound flow of traffic between La Aurora and the center of Barreal in Heredia is closed for repairs during the beginning of this week. The National Roadway Council (CONAVI) announced Monday morning that the structural bases of the bridge have been undercut by excess runoff due to recent heavy rains, making repairs necessary.

CONAVI expects completion of the project by Tuesday evening. It warns, however, that repair work may continue until Wednesday morning.

The parallel cement bridge serving westbound traffic remains open. Traffic Police are overseeing its use to alternately allow the passage of traffic in both directions. Nevertheless, the closure is causing notable congestion.

Those wishing to avoid the congestion can detour to the north, crossing between Barreal and La Aurora at any one of multiple alternatives.

Comment If these bridges had proper maint. over time the would be better off. Just waiting until something happens is a norm here in CR. Most bridges too are temporary bridges being used as perm. bridges in some parts for over 50 years. Wake up!!! The internet is a wealth of information how to do things right. And outside sources willing to give guidance but it seems acceptable to do almost anything with construction half assed. Danger lurks not as a thief but as a society that seems to not care about safety first. I love it down here. It's a shame people don't take pride in there work with construction. Also while work goes on areas are even more dangerous due to poor construction safety practices. People don't seem to care. At night construction holes larger than a car are not clearly MARKED! This alone is a grounds to prosecute those responsible for such dangers. The real crime in Costa Rica is the corruption. Money and materials never seem to be used properly in road projects. Ask Oscar Arias about the new road to the beach. It shold never have been opened! It is a engineering nightmare. Very unsafe in parts! Never planned out properly. How do I even pull over and change a tire safely!!! Let's hold Oscar accountable for pushing the project through even though its unsafe! How does he sleep at night!!!!!
