Clinton joins foreign ministers in
Costa Rica to discuss economic opportunity

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Costa Rica Wednesday evening to participate in the third Pathways to Prosperity summit of foreign ministers.

It's the second time a high-ranking U.S. official from President Barack Obama's administration has visited the country since Obama took office in January of 2009. Her visit, which comes nearly a year after U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's trip here in March 2009, is part of a Latin American tour during which she visited Chile, Argentina and Brazil.

She'll meet with foreign ministers from 15 countries on Thursday, including Canada, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Panama, with the aim of sharing ways to improve access to open markets and to close economic gaps.

The conference began on Wednesday with a series of workshops targeting women entrepreneurs, intended to provide inspiration, guidance and support.

"Study after study has shown that when you invest dollars in women, we have healthier families...and expanded economic growth," said U.S. Ambassador Anne Andrew.

The forum gave enterprises with a strong presence in Costa Rica an opportunity to showcase their work. Among these were Intel, Rainforest Alliance and Earth University. In addition, a number of women entrepreneurs presented success stories.

At the end of the first day, conference participants shared a moment through a video conference with women entrepreneurs in Haiti, who had lost their businesses in the recent earthquake.

After listening to the the Haitian women detail their needs, which included credit, financial advice and support for single moms, Floribeth Venegas, president of the Caribbean, Central and South America Cooperation Confederation, said she can sympathize.

"Many women in this region have the same needs you do," she told them. "But your needs are much more. We'd like to express solidarity with you and tell you to keep moving forward. We are here to support you."

Costa Rica's Arenal Volcano acting up

By Mike McDonald

An eruption at Volcan Arenal, a volcano in north-central Costa Rica, caused small fires and avalanches on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

According to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) the volcanos emitted a stream of lava on its southern flank, causing small avalanches on the south slope of the mountain. The lava also ignited some trees and plants as it reached the fauna line on the volcano's side.

On Tuesday morning, between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. the volcano emitted hot gas and rock in what is known as a pyroclastic eruption, registering small tremors at the OVSICORI.

None of the activity has threatened La Fortuna, the town at the base of the volcano, and Arenal National Park is still open. Park guards said that the recent rumblings had not affected their watch stations.

Scientists with the OVSICORI said the activity is normal and that the accumulation of the material around the crater of Arenal will increase the height of the mountain, which has been growing in recent years due to similar eruptions.

Costa Rica's premier basketball league tipped off Tuesday night, as all eight national teams were in action for the first round of the Torneo de Copa, the league's annual tournament. The first national basketball league was created in 1975; the Superior Basketball League (LBS), which began its fifth season Tuesday, was created in 2005.

Over the course of the next five weeks, the eight teams in the LBS will compete to be the tournament's champion, to be crowned the first week of April.

The teams competing for the Cup are:

  • Escazú
  • University of Costa Rica (UCR)
  • Ferretería Boston – from the southern zone city of Pérez Zeledón
  • San Luis Gonzaga – Cartago based squad
  • USJ ARBA – Second year team based in San Ramón, Alajuela
  • Cartago – first year in top division

In the first round of games Tuesday, Barva, the favorite to win the tournament, trounced UCR 83-57 at the UCR gym in San Pedro. In other action, ARBA crushed San Luis Gonzaga 94 to 52 and Cartago eked past Boston Pérez Zeledon 60-59. Escazú and Kolbi Liceo will play their first round game on March 21.

The eight teams in the tournament are grouped into two divisions of four teams each. In the first round, teams in each division play each other twice for a total of six games. At the completion of the first round, the top two teams from each division advanced to the semifinals, where they will play a best-of-three series. The winners of the two semifinal series will play a best-of-three series in the finals of the competition. The finals are scheduled to begin the week of April 5.
