Lawmaker renounces immunity
to stand drunken-driving homicide trial

Costa Rican lawmaker Ovidio Agüero gave up congressional immunity yesterday to stand trial for running over and killing a cyclist on Nov. 2 while allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

A breathalyzer test marked Agüero's blood/alcohol level at 1.39 grams per liter, above the legal limit of 0.49 g/l, the Public Works and Transport Ministry said.

Luis Barrantes, head of Agüero's Libertarian Movement party, told The Tico Times the group will not ask the lawmaker to resign.
