Institute Sends Help to Flood Victims

Good news came yesterday to some of the families devastated by recent flooding when the Mixed Institute of Social Aid (IMAS) handed out ¢60 million ($116,279) to help them get new housing.

Sixty families in the coffee town of Atenas, northwest of San José, were selected to receive these funds because of the difficult economic situations they're facing after losing their homes and everything in them, according to a statement from IMAS.

In the western suburb of Santa Ana, which was also hit by floods this week, officials are assessing families' situations to see which are most in need of government help.

To the northwest in the Guanacaste province, IMAS workers are taking censuses at temporary shelters, where hundreds remain unable to return to their homes, to determine the level of damage and how to distribute aid.

The eastern province of Cartago, which was severely affected earlier this month by floods, saw a new wave of water yesterday in the sectors of El Guarco, El Alto de Ochomogo, La Lima and Quircot, according to a statement from the National Emergency Commission (CNE).

The commission maintains a red alert for the central Pacific canton of Parrita as well as the Guanacaste cantons of Hojancha, Nandayure, Nicoya, Santa Cruz, Carrillo, Liberia and Santa Cruz, while the rest of the country is under a yellow alert except for the Caribbean province of Limón, which is under a green, preventive alert.

Nicaraguan Accused of Murdering
Daughter in U.S. Arrested in Costa Rica

International and Costa Rican police Wednesday found and arrested William Suárez, a Nicaraguan accused of committing murder more than 20 years ago in Miami, Florida.

Suárez, 49, was arrested at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday in La Guácima de Alajuela, northwest of San José, near his home in the Barrio Las Brisas neighborhood, according to a statement from the international policy agency Interpol.

According to U.S. police reports, Suárez moved his entire family to the United States from Nicaragua in 1984 except his daughter Elsi Suárez, who was one year old at the time and had health problems. She stayed behind with an aunt, who later brought her to live with the rest of the family in the United States.

William Suárez became jealous over the close relationship his daughter had with her aunt and uncle, whom she considered her parents. Suárez became violent, beating the girl on several occasions and eventually killing her in a bathtub in 1986.

He then wrapped her body in a sheet and hid it under the bed she slept in. Police found it there after his sister called them and they raided his apartment.

Suárez entered Costa Rica for the first time in 1989; he has lived here since then and was running an ambulatory business selling eggs. He stands before a San José court and faces extradition to the United States.

Maná Coming to Costa Rica

The legendary Latin American rock band Maná is returning to Costa Rica. As part of a world tour, the band will touch down at the Ricardo Saprissa Stadium in the northern suburb of Tibás Nov. 20.

Maná has become one of the most influential bands in Latin America, winning three Grammy awards and enjoying commercial success in Europe, the United States and Latin America.

After a four-year hiatus, the Mexican band released their latest album “ Amor es Combatir ” in 2006. It reached the number four spot of the Billboard 200.

The concert will feature a light show and a setup that event organizer Eduardo Agami of Evenpro Costa Rica described as “very Maná.”

Prices and ticket purchase locations will be announced later.
