Investigators from the Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) arrested Thursday two National Police officers for allegedly stealing ₡100,000 (some $190) from a Nicaraguan citizen.

The suspects, identified as Camacho, 38, and Fuentes, 27, work at the downtown police station in San José.

The investigation indicated that the event occurred on April 17 this year, when at about 11:00 pm, the victim was walking near Parque La Merced in downtown San José. Apparently, the suspects stopped him and told him to get into the police car.

After a tour, they took him to Barrio Cuba neighborhood, southwest of downtown San José, where they beat him and stole the cash.

OIJ authorities said in a press release the suspects could be linked to other similar crimes.
