President Laura Chinchilla will nominate Foreign Trade Minister Anabel González as Costa Rica’s candidate to chair the general directorate of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

If elected, González would assume office in December 2013 to replace Pascal Lamy from France. González headed the WTO Agricultural Division from 2005-2009.

Chinchilla acknowledged that it would be difficult to replace the current foreign trade minister, and she asked González’s husband, Communications Minister Francisco Chacón, to remain at his post until the end of his term.

González has extensive experience in international negotiations such as free trade agreements and attracting foreign direct investment.
