Posted: Thursday, February 16, 2012 - By Tico Times
More than one-third of the victims were subject to a violent crime.

The results of a National Statistics and Census Institute home survey showed that one in every five families was a victim of violence from July 2009 to July 2010, in a story first reported by the daily La Nación.

The survey polled more than 1.2 million homes in the country, and found that more than 255,000 of respondents had been crime victims. Of those offenses, 36.4 percent were violent crimes.

Theft or assaults outside of the home were most common, representing 103,938 of the cases. Some 76,000 victims were robbed in their homes. The most common locations for the crimes reported were the Central Valley and the Atlantic coast.
