Power surge from Costa Rica leaves most of Nicaragua in the dark

Posted: Wednesday, January 25, 2012 - By AFP
In another strange incident between neighbors, a power overload from Costa Rica accidentally caused a blackout in almost all of Nicaragua on Tuesday night.

A power surge from Costa Rica through a Central American electrical grid left almost all of Nicaragua in the dark for almost an hour Tuesday night, said Ernesto Tiffer, head of Nicaragua’s National Electricity Company.

“The overload from Costa Rica disrupted almost every electric power plant in Nicaragua,” confirmed Tiffer, without giving any other details, to pro-government radio station Radio Ya.

The blackout affected 13 of the 15 Nicaraguan departments, and was restored  at 10 p.m. local time.

Tiffer said only the departments of Chinandega and part of León (in the northwest) were not affected by the regional power surge.

Nicaragua has been in the dark for decades. LOL.
Vicki, the power went out in Escazu Tuesday night as well, I believe it was about 730 p.m. Not uncommon here in Escazu, not sure if it had anything to do with this? But the Mountainside where I live was blacked out as well. In most cases it's just a small area and you can see lights in some areas, which wasn't the case Tuesday night. If you put 2&2 together, sound like this was the cause for the blackout. The power wasn't off that long here, maybe 10 minutes.
Tuesday night we had a black out up where have been living - in Pico Blanco & all the surrounding mountains were blacked out. Anyone know if this was part of the same thing. Unfortunately I can't remember the time.
