Google responds: By no means should Google Maps be used as a reference to decide military actions between two countries.

The Internet application Google Maps has found itself in the middle of the ongoing border dispute between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Costa Rican media sources this week expressed outrage that the Google Maps image of the northeast border region shows Isla Calero, the disputed land between the two countries at the mouth of the Río San Juan, is in Nicaraguan territory.

The Costa Rican media alleges that former guerrilla leader Edén Pastora, who is heading Nicaragua’s river-dredging operation, used the Google Maps application as a justification for his incursion into Costa Rica territory. Pastora, however, has made no claims about relying on Google Maps to determine the border.

On the contrary, Pastora said in statements to the Nicaraguan press this week that his understanding of the border is based on the original text of the 1858 Cañas-Jerez Treaty.

“The maps are not going to tell me where the borders are; the treaties are,” Pastora said.

However, the international media has already picked up on the invented Google Maps scandal, prompting the company to respond. Daniel Helft, senior manager for public policies for Google Latin America, wrote on a public Google blog that while “Google maps are of very high quality and Google works constantly to improve and update existing information, by no means should they be used as a reference to decide military actions between two countries.”

Helft added, “In this instance Google has determined that there was an inaccuracy in the shaping of the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua and is working to update the information as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile, Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos sent his own letter to Google representatives on Nov. 4, saying that the contentious map is “absolutely correct” and that Google shouldn’t make “any modifications” to the border coordinates.

Letter from Father Juan Alvarez Daniel Ortega

President Daniel Ortega EXCELLENCY
Thinking of you as President of all Nicaraguans, my respects.
This is not an obstacle, so that from the deepest sadness and bitter disappointment, considering the general good of the people I love, I take the liberty to invite you to think aloud.

I spent years of my life, I worked with the joy provided by being near the suffering of those who have no voice in service to the lower classes of my beloved Nicaragua, in the Pacific: San Rafael del Sur, Pochomil, Masachapa, Ingenio Montelimar Falls ... and other communities such as Las Americas and the North Gutierrez.

For Ingenio Montelimar, in the harvest season, I defended, taking risks, the rights of honest workers and denounced the inhuman treatment, long and exhausting days of the "slaves" of Somoza. In addition, I harvested the wrath of power by refusing to receive, at the Church of S. Rafael del Sur, A. Somoza D. and Mrs. Hop Portocarrero, with the inauguration of the newly built silos. This was no time and there was no reason, given the dire circumstances, a Te Deum of thanksgiving!

I was in the "hunger strike" in the cathedral, a week-I do not know if in September 69 or 70 - in defense of the rights and lives of college students from the UCA, arbitrarily detained. Also in peaceful marches in defense of teachers in the Master's house, surrounded by mobs "nicolasianas" where she was assaulted the then Archbishop of Managua Archbishop Barni.

For years, down to Managua, on the road south at kilometer eight or so left, I saw a wall-and I suppose there is, the following sign: "The San Juan River is Nicaraguan." I thought to myself ... and who doubts it?

Over the years, I realized that when justified rose the cry of the people, oppressed in a thousand forms, claiming rights over and over again and solve the problems of hunger and marginalization disparaging the government in power , resorted to the mantra of "necessary unity and solidarity in defense of national integrity and dignity" Nicaraguans had to be ready for anything ...

Defense of the "sovereignty of Nicaragua over the San Juan River," then and now, non-existent threats and enemies know what their corrupt power invented.

After the rivers of blood spilled by people who believe in high ideals and a final release of the dynastic Somoza dictatorship, we are like the beginning: dictatorial and whimsical poses, in this case of a President and the ruling party, FSLN that in the end betrayed the revolution in which the beginning and sin of naivete, many had believed.

The noble people of the universal Ruben Dario, still awaiting the release ... longed to live in peace and dignity.

Costa Rica, people whose nationality brother and I am proud, only gestures of support and solidarity with Nicaragua has had. They say it if not more than 500,000 Nicaraguans today - yearning for their homeland, have been welcomed with open arms on Costa Rican soil. Say that thousands of students, forced into exile and completed their secondary and higher education, thanks to the generosity and understanding of the MEP and many universities in Costa Rica.

You, Mr. President, the new commander, the Group of Eleven-time control supported even by European institutions and governments-host had that experience, closeness, solidarity with their cause, by the Costa Rican people and the "goodness "the government then in power.

Another would be "history" if they had not had the band "No Man's Land" on the Southern Front, where they fought and risked lives who truly believed in the release: barefoot, starved, left not the hand of God, but other in the comfort of you living without depriving yourself of anything already covered in any danger in San Jose. It is not necessary to fall into signs. Yes I can think of, ask if you know where Commander Borge is in San Jose, Santa Teresita Church and certain "mansions" in the area of Three Rivers and the old access road Chapui.

Pegúntese, Mr. President, why people like S. M. Ramirez, C. Tunnerman, the Cardenal brothers, Moises Hassan, DT ..., I doubt the spelling of some names, and so many others, left the ranks of a revolution that offered a promised land, so long desired, to the suffering people unique.

"Being grateful is well born." Show you a minimal gesture of gratitude to the noble and civic Costa Rican people, people always peace-loving and respectful of the rights of peoples. If not ... "Do not be grateful, is bastards!"

The border and its proposal for "milestones", which is a smoke more, handling most of the sentiments of the Nicaraguan people to stay in power and committing outrages at will attempt to humiliate a sister.

The Ticos, will never be their slaves. Reason and international law protect us.

Look inside your consciousness and love and respect the feelings of their fellow nobles who need honest servers.

Ensuring the common good, happiness, peace within its borders are based justice is the mission of "who is mandated to govern."

My hope for peace in the "borders" and in the hearts of all men of good will, brotherly peoples, Nicaraguans and Costa Ricans.

I remember something, sounds, "their days of struggle" "Tomorrow, my son, everything will be different"? What a shame!

Atte.

I could say, Nicaragua is supposedly Vilic warrior pleitero. That if, of course, because of the government of Nicaragua that used these measures to be noticed. But the brothers Nicaraguans living in Costa Rica, which are more attached to Costa Rica and live here, quietly, as Costa Ricans. They work honestly as we do.
I wander if Tim Rogers has a Nicaragan wife...
Well, you can say Pastora has made no claims about relying on Google Maps to determine the border, but is even silliest and just foolish that Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos asked Google representative Jeffrey Hardy to NOT change the depiction of the border, which it called "correct": "I officially request that (the border marking) not be modified," Foreign Minister Samuel Santos.

Mi Comandante, in no time, when all this finish, Costa Rica will have another turist attraction: "Google Island Amusement Park"
Adam Williams your are wrong, Pastora, actually made claims about relying on Google Maps to La Nacion journalist.
Well if the Nicaraguan town that is on that country's side were to be kept as is and let us say that the airstrip would not be built. That means Tourism would falter. Also I doubt now that ICE from Costa Rica would be able to provide the Nicaraguan town with electricity so they stay with electric power from a generator for only 8 hours a day. Then, let's say that the Nicaraguan army keeps dredging the river for better travel. There is no harm in that right? Wouldn't this be a great entry point for terrorists coming in from Venezuela making their way to the USA. The USA does not care about Nicaragua anymore. Reagan and Oliver North are long gone and since very rich from these two countries. Venezuela has commercial flights going to Iran all the time. Now I ask you who in Venezuela wants to vacation in Iran? I bet those Venezuelan flights are full of some Hispanic looking people. Teach them Spanish in Venezuela and get them in through that river in Nicaragua. How about it? Now they can pass for Nicas and speak the language and make their way up to the US.
why is all this getting too crazy? the people that live in boths sides of the river are in peace. They all ( nicaraguans and costaricans ) help each other .They live like a good neighbors. the river is one side nicaragua one side costa rica let's say half and half they've been living with that for many years . the island is part of Costa Rica there is not doubt of that !!, now I saw the Nicaraguan army cutting trees from the island, who gave them the right to do that ? is that why they want it ? to destroy it? why not to let it along the way it is ? The Costarican goverment is making a good job trying to conserve their forest. why not to save it and live as a part of our planet for all to enjoy it and visit it?
few years ago the Nicaraguans were asking Costa Rica goverment for one of the cities .Guanacaste!!! they want it because they said it was theirs!!! come on !!! wake up they can't even handle what they have now and they want more?......
In this address anybody can see the real and original map of the frontier, made in 1897 by Edward Porter Alexander, the ENGINEER-UMPIRE. There is no doubt that Nicaragua is invading CostaRica territory.
