Earthquake before sunrise jolts Costa Rica

A magnitude 6 earthquake hit the country Monday. Several aftershocks have followed, including a 4.6 magnitude temblor Tuesday morning.

Epicenter: 34 kilometers southwest of Estero Garita in Aguirre, Puntarenas

At 4:55 a.m. Monday morning, an earthquake thumped most of Costa Rica. The quake registered a magnitude of 6 and its epicenter was 34 kilometers southwest of Estero Garita in Aguirre, Puntarenas on the central Pacific coast, according to a report from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori). The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude of 5.8.

Reports of the earthquake extended as far south as Panama.

Multiple aftershocks have hit the area, including a 4.6 magnitude earthquake at 10:46 a.m. Tuesday. Ovsicori informed that there had been at least 10 aftershocks with magnitudes under 3.

There has been no reports of injuries or structure damages so far.
