White House threatens to veto Cuba travel curbs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House signaled its intent Monday to veto legislation that would stymie President Barack Obama’s push to open travel to Cuba, the latest political clash over his landmark foreign policy goal.

A transportation bill includes measures designed to ambush Obama’s broader effort to thaw Cuba ties that were set in deep freeze during the Cold War.

“His senior advisors would recommend that he veto the bill,” the White House said in a statement.

Congress is considering a bill that would restrict flights and cruise ships from going to Cuba, travel the Obama administration has encouraged.

In the White House’s view, it would also “place unnecessary restrictions on options for educational, religious, or other permitted travel” to the communist island.

Republicans keen to connect with Cuban-American voters have opposed Obama’s plan to improve ties, citing persistent political persecution in Cuba.

The field of prospective Republican presidential candidates includes Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush, both of whom have their political base in Florida and have close ties to the Cuban-American community.

Obama is scrambling to do something memorable before he is out of office. Everything he has touched so far has soured, with the exception of killing Bin Laden, and his record on foreign policy is dismal. A reconciled Cuba might be his last chance at some sort of legacy that the USA can look back on as an achievement.
Don’t forget that Cuba is still a communist country and is ideologically at loggerheads with the USA. There is also a large component of the new American population that will never reconcile with what the Cuban revolution cost them. Even in Cuba some people think that what is happening now is just lips flapping with no substance.
I think Obama is grasping for something by which he can be remembered with some pride. I doubt if this is going to prove to be the answer.
