Taking a cue from the ubiquitous Costa Rican mantra “pura vida” and with a faithful nod to man’s best friend, PerroVida Craft Beer opened its doors Sept. 28 to craft beer consumers in the central Pacific region.
Already a winner, PerroVida earned 1st Place (IPA’s) at last year’s 2nd Annual Festival de Cerveza Artesenal in San José, competing amongst the likes of well-established Costa Rican brewers Craft Brewing Company and Treintay-Cinco. While carefully edging out a first place win with their bold, dark and hoppy IPA called MassiveMastiff, PerroVida also served the crowd their standard 60-minute IPA Zaguate, which was an immediate favorite and has remained the best seller. Other beers include a light and refreshing traditional Hefeweizen called La Jefa, as well as a black IPA named Black Betty, which is a floral IPA that is dark in color but lighter in taste.
Formed in late 2012, and growing ever since, PerroVida is a labor of love from three families, joined in the common goal of capturing the essence and spirit of Costa Rica, both in your glass and in their company. The new PerroVida brew house is inside the gate at Rainmaker Park in Parrita, about 10 kilometers before Quepos. For those unfamiliar, Rainmaker is a breathtaking 1,500-acre microclimate rainforest outfitted with 11 suspension bridges spanning the canopy, waterfalls, natural pools and stunning biodiversity. Locals can walk the park for $4, tourists for $15. Typical food is available most days, and of course, the beer’s cold and fresh from the tap (but is only to be enjoyed responsibly after hiking).
