Sergio Santana, the executive director for the not for profit Costasverdes, is working to help conserve and restore the biodiversity in the ecosystems along the coast. Together with SINAC-MINAET, businesses and the community, Costasverdes is working in the National Refuge Vida Silvestre in Playa Hermosa.

During the first leg of the 10th Annual Los Sueños Signature Billfish Tournament, 1,412 billfish were released by 38 participating boats – a new record! The first leg of the 2013 Los Sueños Signature Billfish Series, presented jointly by Smith Merritt Insurance, Travelers Insurance and International Special Risks, was held from Jan. 16‐19 at Los Sueños Resort and Marina.

The tournament welcomed 38 participating teams and 147 individual anglers. First Place went to the 42’ Maverick, Dragin Fly, captained by Tucker Smith, anglers: George Beckwith, Tim Don Levy, Mike Rankey and Dwight Wolf; Second Place went to the 55’ Viking, Rebel captained by Tony Carrizosa, anglers: Fred Camoin, Kostya Petrov, James Lagrone and Hubert Lagane. Third Place went to the 58’ Merritt, HT HOOK captained by Ronnie Riebem, anglers: Harry Shufflebarger, Brian Barrett, David Bertolozzi and Greg White.  Austin Angel from Sea Angel won the coveted title of Top Angler.

It has been a good fishing season for Austin. Just one month ago, he won the WBS World Championship here in Los Sueños, making him the youngest angler in the history of the WBS to carry this prestigious title. During the first leg of the 2013 Los Sueños Signature Billfish Series, Austin released 25 sailfish for 2,500 individual points.  The Entries for Leg 2, March 13-16, 2013, are being accepted via the official tournament website www.LStournaments.com, or contact Ashley Bretecher, Tournament Director ata.bretecher@lsrm.com.

On Saturday, don’t miss Clarita’s Gran Torneo de Volley Ball at 11 a.m. Then it is Superbowl Sunday in Jacó. The AFC Champion, the Baltimore Ravens, will be playing agains the NFC Champion, the San Francisco 49ers, to decide the NFL Champion for the 2012 season, and there will be no shortage of places to watch the game. The Patio, Jacó Taco, The Poseidon’s SkyBar and the Hook Up in Los Sueños are some places to check it out! Clarita’s on the Beach will not only be showing the game, but will also hold its Annual Miss Clarita’s Contest, which is sure to be a good time.  

The Central Pacific Women’s Group will be holding a meeting on Wednesday Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. in Club Del Cielo. The meeting will be focusing on the reorganization of the group and their goals for the year 2013. For more information, contact Nancy Leiton at leiton_nancy@yahoo.com.
