Puerto Viejo Run Down

August 8, 2012

For the month of August, the South Caribbean celebrates the Festival de la Cultura Negra, organized by the Comité Cívico Cultural Étnico Negro-Limón.  This year’s theme is “Back to our Roots,” and the month is filled with performances and celebrations of this region’s vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture.

For a full schedule of events, visit http://goo.gl/Awqty or check out the Facebook page for the Culture Ministry for colorful photos. The month of festivities culminates with the Gran Parade de Gala on August 31 in Limón; this parade is always a lively exhibition of Caribbean pride.

As everyone knows, Mother’s Day is coming up; many specials and goodies are available in the area to treat the leading lady in your life. Check out the Mother’s Day event at Jungle Love in Playa Chiquita, where owners Yamu and Poppy are serving well-deserving moms with some extra love. Find special entrees for everyone and a free glass of sangria for Moms (with dinner or dessert). Jungle Love is open from 5 p.m.-9:30 p.m. For Mother’s Day reservations (a must), call 2750-0162.

The Jaguar Animal Rescue Center has recently released a collared aracari named Guaro. After months of rehabilitation, this beautiful bird was able to fly off into the greenery.  They’ve also recently accepted Tonino, the newest and smallest member of their howler monkey community.

If you haven’t checked out this nonprofit rescue project, it’s time to take a walk on the wild side. Come see what Encar and Sandro are doing for the local wildlife – it’s truly a beautiful thing. Jaguar Rescue is located in South Cocles/Playa Chiquita and tours are Mon.-Sat., 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. $15 per person.
