Arenal Report

June 30, 2011

The Needle Threaders of Arenal, formed this spring by Mary Whaley to make quilts for 15 orphans at the Hogarcito de Niños San Juan Bosco in La Fortuna, accomplished their task on June 22, presenting 15 quilts to the children. Each unique quilt was personalized with the name of one of the orphans. Mary said, “It was great fun for us, and the children were so happy when they saw their own name on their own special quilt. … They were just as cute as could be, and the staff were obviously talented and genuinely fond of the children. We will keep in touch and send more quilts when new children arrive at the orphanage.”

Visits to the orphanage may be arranged by calling ahead at 2479-9500. The email address is hogarcitozt@yahoo.es.

Longhorn Bar and Grill’s first annual Chili Cook-off will challenge palates this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Longhorn is at Cinco Esquinas, the junction of the lake road to Nuevo Arenal with the road to San Luis and Tronadora. Tickets for the event cost $5. The chili cooks will vie for two prizes, one awarded by the judges and the other by vote of the patrons. There will be live music and some games, including “chicken !@#$ bingo.”
