Jacó Happenings

June 2, 2011

Jacó’s Flag Football League is gearing up for playoffs. Pat Hundley’s Bohío Team is in the lead, followed by Tim Odom’s Poseidon Team and Capt. Eric Holzgang’s Los Amigos Team, with Jimmy T’s Morgan’s Cove Team bringing up the rear. The group plans to start a softball league as well. For more information, contact Doug Giampapa at dvg2@cornell.edu or 8860-1941. For softball, the season is set to start in late July and will feature one game a week at the Jacó Stadium field. The slow-pitch league will have four teams of 15. If you are interested in playing, contact Doug.

Thanks to a friendly invitation from Punta Leona Hotel and Club Manager Boris Gordienko and project manager Andrea Osorio, animal welfare group McKee Project Jacó recently had a great opportunity to present its mission to the public at the recent Rainfest music festival. An estimated 200 people visited the McKee stand over the course of two days. McKee members hope the presentation will help recruit much needed new volunteers. During the event, Boris donated to McKee two sets of a wonderful bilingual edition of “Costa Rica’s Authentic Cuisine” by chef Doris Goldgewicht, famous in Costa Rica for her TV show, “Sin secretos con Doris.” The cookbooks will be auctioned in an upcoming McKee fundraiser. If you would like to help the McKee Project, contact Katja Bader at 2643-4012.

The new Asociación Integral de Desarrollo de Jacó was formed earlier this month, and will be working on projects to benefit the community. The board of directors are: Luis G. Morales, president; Pamela Cerdas, vice president; Jennifer Vargas, secretary; Marjorie Alpízar, treasurer; Luis Campos, Alexandra Magali Villalobos and Rafael Antonio Castro, vocales (board members); and Alvin Solano, fiscal (nonvoting observer).

June is all about surfing in the Central Pacific region, and the next two weekends will be full of surf contests. This weekend, Volcom’s Howler Monkey Fish Surf Series is set to take place in Jacó with lots of grom action. Next weekend, June 10 to 12, the National Surf Circuit finals will be held in Hermosa in front of Backyard, Vista Hermosa, Ola Bonita, Surf Inn Hermosa, Katin Surfside and Cabinas Las Olas. For more information, see www.surfingcr.net.

To check out our local surfers in action, pick up a copy of “Josymar Fuentes and Friends” video, featuring some great surfing clips. It’s available at Jacó Surf Club, The Point Surf Shop, the Del Mar Surf Camp office, Roca Loca Surf Shop, B&B Surf Shop and Piko Surf Shop. Proceeds go to help the orphanage in San José.
