Fernando Pérez recently opened El Aguacate Encebollado restaurant, serving traditional Costa Rican food 24-7 across from Il Galeone commercial center. Dine in or order to go from 2643-3111 or 8821-2200. Nellie and Richard Lemon of Lemon Zest (, 2643-2591) have decided to open every Sunday through Easter with an Italian menu and fine wines. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. The menu includes traditional pasta, veal, chicken and seafood dishes.

The Monkey Bar is having its annual Christmas Eve party tonight with DJ Manny X, and a Pura Vida Christmas party tomorrow with DJ Julio. Holiday specials will be offered both nights. The day after Christmas, tropical cowgirls Kim Carson and Nancy Buchman will be playing at Jaco Taco from 5 to 8 p.m.

Next weekend, it’s all about New Year’s Eve. Villa Caletas will offer a special buffet dinner in its Mirador Restaurant (2637-0505) beginning at 9 p.m., with fireworks and a champagne toast. El Bohio Bar (2643-3112) in the center of town is hosting its annual lobster fest, complete with a bonfire and fireworks. Gretchen Strait of the Monkey Bar says the bar will offer two-for-one champagne bottles at its New Year’s Eve party. Morgan’s Cove (2643-3147) in south Jacó will have music by Erick León y La Jungla to go with its special buffet-style dinner, along with a midnight carnival and one of the biggest fireworks shows in town. Out in Hermosa, local favorite Chupacabras will play at the Backyard Bar starting at 10 p.m., accompanying a pig roast, barbecue and fireworks – no cover. And on New Year’s Day, check out the masters and open surf finals at 2 p.m. in front of the Backyard.
