FOLLOWING a surgical complication,transplant patient Carlos Sánchez, 21,rejected the kidney that a stranger, KatiaBrenes, 22, had donated to him inNovember.Without having met him, the dayBrenes heard of Sánchez’s need for a kidneythrough a mutual friend of theirs, shedecided to donate one of hers.Though devastated about the rejection,Brenes said she was hopeful her giftwould inspire others to consider donatingan organ.And it did.However, by year’s end, the 28 peoplewho had offered an organ had backed out,according to kidney specialist Dr. JoséFrancisco Mora
